What an honor it is that so many brides have chosen Barkley Wedding Photography to document their wedding day. Several hundred weddings into this “job” and I still love being a wedding photographer. I believe in marriage and believe in photojournalistic wedding photography so this just seems meant to be...kind of like you and your fiancee. The split second moments really grab my attention and so I’m constantly honing my skills as a photojournalist. These milliseconds of time are priceless as far as I’m concerned. Physical actions and facial expressions come and go but the camera solidifies the moment. Time stands still as we are reminded of how incredible that particular moment in time actually was. And when you compile several hundred photos from the same day...well, you have a real wedding story on your hands.
For me it’s always been about art and music. It’s in my family...it’s in my blood. I learned to see with the eye of a wedding photographer from my family. My Uncle and Aunt traveled the world with Nikons and Kodachrome. As a child I saw the entire world enlarged and saturated on a huge projection screen. You may think “slide shows...how boring!”. Not true in this case. They were incredible photographers who understood light, composition and people. Their ability to capture the mood of a room to the inner feeling on the outer facial expression made a huge impression on me.
My education didn’t stop there. My parents were far more interested in capturing the moments of our lives. This made a significant impact on me. It’s a record of the most fundamental points in our lives. They taught me the value of candid photography. Having had teachers from both the technical and emotional sides of photography helped me develop my own personal style.
My photography studies and experimentation are on going. I believe that if I’m not growing I’m dying. Staying on top of what is happening artistically and technically is very important in the wedding photography business. My highest charge is not just to look and shoot but to truly see who or what I am photographing and capture the truth of the moment.
